As a kid, I knew we didn’t have discretionary family income that would allow me to occasionally go to a movie with friends, or perhaps buy one of the newer forms of music media…the cassette tape.
At 13 years old, I borrowed my grandfather’s 19” push mower, tied a string around a 1-gallon gas can (so that I could hang it on the handle of the lawnmower), grabbed a broom, and went door-to-door, asking neighbors if I could cut their grass.
I soon had over 10 customers, including the local post office (located about 1.5 miles away), which allowed me to earn a few dollars each week. I walked to each property, mowed the yard, and swept the walkways. I maintained this business for several years.
After high school and while attending college, I worked summers at the electric company where I began to learn the ins and outs of commercial lawn maintenance.
I discovered how commercial properties required a very different approach than residential lawns. More importantly, I realized that although the business I served was my client, the ultimate customer was the consumer who paid my client.
