Commercial Weed Control & Prevention in Alabama
A weed-infested commercial lawn communicates a poorly managed property and in Alabama’s climate, weeds spread fast. A single nutsedge plant left untreated can colonize an HOA common area in one season. Crabgrass pressure peaks exactly when your commercial property gets the most traffic.
Orange Circle provides commercial weed control programs for businesses, HOA communities, apartment complexes, and office parks across Birmingham, Homewood, and Pelham, targeted treatments applied at the right time to prevent weeds before they start and eliminate those that break through.

What Makes Commercial Turf More Vulnerable to Weed Invasion
Commercial turf faces weed pressure from multiple directions that residential lawns simply don’t deal with at the same scale. High foot traffic compacts soil, reduces turf density, and creates exactly the kind of thin, stressed areas where weed seeds germinate most aggressively. Parking lot islands and medians absorb heat from surrounding asphalt, creating elevated soil temperatures that accelerate germination cycles. Large open turf areas with any degree of thinning become targets for rapid weed spread across the entire site.
For HOA communities, weed pressure in common areas directly affects resident satisfaction and property values two things HOA boards are accountable for at every meeting. For retail centers and office parks, weeds in visible turf areas and parking lot islands undermine the professional appearance that tenant businesses depend on. And for apartment complexes, weeds in courtyards and common areas generate maintenance complaints that reflect on property management.
- High foot traffic creates compacted, thin turf zones where weeds establish easily
- Parking lot islands absorb asphalt heat, accelerating weed seed germination
- Large commercial turf areas allow rapid spread once weeds establish a foothold
- Stressed or thin turf from drought or heavy use creates immediate weed vulnerability
- Common areas with multiple exposure points require consistent preventive treatment to stay ahead of pressure

How We Build A Commercial Weed Control Program
Commercial weed control is not a one-time application, it’s a season-long program that requires precise timing, the right chemistry for each weed type, and consistent monitoring between applications. Our commercial programs are built around Alabama’s specific growing season and weed pressure patterns.
Pre-Emergent Round 1
(Late February to Early March)
The most critical application of the entire program. Pre-emergent goes down before soil temperatures reach 55 degrees to stop crabgrass, goosegrass, spurge, and Poa Annua from germinating.
Pre-Emergent Round 2
(June to July)
A mid-season barrier refresh targets summer annual grasses and second-flush crabgrass on properties with high weed pressure or large open turf areas.
Pre-Emergent Round 3
(September to October)
The fall application protects turf through winter and into the following spring. Winter annuals including Chickweed, Henbit, and Poa Annua are targeted.
Post-Emergent Broadleaf Treatment
Selective herbicide targets actively growing broadleaf weeds including Dandelion, Clover, Dollarweed, and Plantain without harming surrounding turf.
Post-Emergent Sedge Treatment
Nutsedge requires specific sedge-targeted chemistry to eliminate. Standard broadleaf products will not control nutsedge effectively.
Spot Treatment Program
Available as an add-on for HOA communities and apartment complexes requiring tighter control between scheduled applications.
What’s Growing In Your Commercial Turf And How We Stop It
Alabama’s climate supports some of the most aggressive weed species in the country, and commercial properties tend to see them in higher volumes than residential lawns. Here are the most common commercial weed problems we manage across the Birmingham metro area.
Crabgrass
Crabgrass is the most widespread grassy weed across commercial turf in Alabama. It germinates when soil temperatures hit 55 degrees and spreads aggressively through summer. Without a properly timed pre-emergent application, it can quickly overtake large commercial turf areas.
Nutsedge
Nutsedge thrives in wet and poorly drained commercial turf areas, especially around retention ponds and irrigation zones. It grows faster than surrounding turf and requires specialized sedge chemistry for effective elimination.
Dollarweed
Dollarweed commonly appears in consistently moist turf areas and spreads through both seeds and underground rhizomes. Targeted post-emergent applications are required for long-term control.
Poa Annua
Poa Annua germinates during fall and becomes highly visible through winter in Bermuda commercial lawns. A properly timed fall pre-emergent application is the most effective prevention strategy.
Common Commercial Turf Weeds We Control
- Crabgrass – Controlled with precisely timed pre-emergent applications
- Nutsedge – Requires sedge-specific chemistry, not standard broadleaf treatment
- Dollarweed – Common in irrigated and low-lying commercial turf areas
- Clover & Dandelion – Managed with selective post-emergent treatment
- Poa Annua – Fall pre-emergent is the most effective prevention strategy
Documentation And Reporting For HOA Boards And Property Managers
Property managers and HOA boards need more than just a crew showing up and spraying. Accurate reporting, treatment records, and organized documentation help protect commercial properties while keeping maintenance programs transparent and trackable.
Detailed Treatment Records
Every application includes written documentation covering treatment dates, products applied, target weeds, and treatment locations.
Board Meeting Ready Reports
HOA communities receive organized reporting that aligns with board meeting schedules for easier resident communication and committee review.
Portfolio-Level Reporting
